Google ex-CEO Schmidt reveals he uses an iPhone

Eric Schmidt, Chief Executive of Alphabet (former CEO of Google) revealed at the Startup Europe Fest that he uses an iPhone.

Tech industry titans Tim Cook and Eric Schmidt took their battle for corporate domination to the heart of Europe today seeking to win over new startups and IT enthusiasts.
In a rare move, Apple chief executive Cook and his bitter rival, boss Schmidt appeared at the opening day of a seminar organised in Amsterdam for the week-long Startup Europe Fest -- although they did not take the stage together.
And Schmidt, chief executive for Alphabet and former Google boss, triggered laughter when he revealed he had an iPhone -- made by his rival -- in his pocket as well as a Samsung.
When an audience show of hands revealed more people had an iPhone than an Android, Schmidt said ironically: "So much for the Android monopoly in Europe."
"The Samsung is better, has a better battery. Are we clear?" he insisted. "And to those of you who are iPhone users, I'm right!"
At the top of the corporate world, Apple and Google are in a back-and-forth battle to be number one.
It's not clear which of the two Silicon Valley giants will emerge on top in a contest which highlights the contrast of very different business models.
The two companies have a virtual duopoly on the smartphone market, but Apple makes its own hardware and software while Google provides only the free Android software for handsets, including many made by low-cost manufacturers.
"Part of our job is to seed the market with ideas," Schmidt said, as the two men lobbed a series of jabs at each other's companies in their separate appearances.
He also urged more European entrepreneurs to take a risk and get behind start-ups, saying Google was hiring thousands of Europeans every year because they had nowhere to go to on their home continent.
Apple was meanwhile on a mission "to bring the app economy to places where it's missed, because ... we recognise it hasn't gone everywhere yet and we want it to very much," Cook told the Amsterdam forum.
"There is nothing like ... unlocking the creativity and innovation of millions of people," he said.
He also defended Apple from accusations that it was operating a kind of "closed" policy on its app store.
There were now two million apps on the Apple store, "that doesn't sound too closed. We do curate ... there's certain things we don't want to sell like pornography," he added.

US lawmakers question India's plans for Chabahar port citing sanction violations

US lawmakers say that while sanctions on Iran were lifted last year after the two countries reached an agreement on nuclear technology, certain sanctions still remain.

US senators questioned on Tuesday whether India's development of a port in southern Iran for trade access risked violating international sanctions, and a State Department official assured them the administration would closely examine the project.
"We have been very clear with the Indians (about) continuing restrictions on activities with respect to Iran," Nisha Desai Biswal, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, said on Tuesday.
"We have to examine the details of the Chabahar announcement to see where it falls in that place," she testified to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday pledged up to $500 million to develop the Iranian port of Chabahar, to try to give his country trade access to Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asia. The route is currently all but blocked by Pakistan, long at odds politically with India.
The United States and Europe lifted sanctions in January under a deal with Iran to limit its nuclear program but some restrictions to trade remain, tied to issues such as human rights and terrorism.

Biswal said she believed India's relationship with Iran was primarily focused on economic and energy issues, and said the administration recognized India's need for a trade route.
"From the Indian perspective, Iran represents for India a gateway into Afghanistan and Central Asia," she said. "It needs access that it doesn't have."

Biswal said she had not seen any sign of Indian engagement with Iran in areas, such as military cooperation, that might be of concern to the United States.
Modi is due to visit the United States next month and will address a joint meeting of Congress, a rare honor.
Senator Ben Cardin, the committee's top Democrat, asked if Biswal expected formal security cooperation agreements to be signed during that visit.
She noted that India and the United States have already strengthened their security cooperation in several areas. "We're looking at what additional areas we can engage in to deepen that cooperation," Biswal said.
Washington sees its relationship with India as critical, partly to counterbalance China's rising power. President Barack Obama has called it "one of the defining partnerships of the 21st century."

Australia: Indian-origin sisters killed in car crash

Anjumol and Asha's car rammed into a truck in Queensland when they were returning home.

Two Indian-origin sisters were killed when their car collided with a truck in north-east Australia.
Anjumol, 23, and Asha Mathew, 18, were returning home when their car rammed into a truck at Peaks Crossing in Queensland on Monday. A missing complaint was lodged by their family friends Ranjeet Vadassery and Anish Mathew when the sisters did not return home. The police confirmed the death of the duo on late Monday.
"They were wonderful young people, and it's a very big loss for all of us personally," Vadassery said. "We both hail from Kerala and it's a small close knit community in Toowoomba. Since then a lot of friends have got together on many occasions while we were students with church and cultural activities," he said.
A student of University of Southern Queensland, Anjumol was a nurse at Lourdes home and her sister was following her sister's footsteps and studying nursing at the same varsity. The sisters and other relatives of the deceased are working out modalities with the Indian embassy to bring the bodies to India for cremation. Their parents still live in India.

India signs Rs 677 crore loan agreement with World Bank for piped water supply

The project aims to provide access to a continuous piped water supply in various cities in Karnataka.

India on Tuesday signed a $100 million (about Rs 677 crore) loan agreement with multilateral lending agency World Bank for Karnataka Urban Water Supply Modernisation Project.
The project aims to provide access to a continuous piped water supply in various cities in Karnataka and strengthen the service delivery arrangements at the city level, a finance ministry statement said.
Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development & Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) is the implementing agency for the project, it added.
The project will have four broad components - capital investment programme, institution building, technical assistance for sector development and project management.
It will be implemented over a period of six years, initially in the twin cities of Hubballi-Dharwad, with provision for other eligible cities to join the project at a later date, the statement said.
It will help the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation set up a city-level water utility that will take over water supply operations from the professional operating company at the end of its contract period.
It will benefit about one million residents of Hubballi- Dharwad, including estimated 160,000 slum dwellers.
The agreement was signed by Department of Economic Affairs Joint Secretary Raj Kumar on behalf of India and World Bank's India Acting Country Director Michael Haney on behalf of World Bank.

Twitter is removing the character count from images and usernames

Twitter handles and attached media will no longer count toward your character limit. More words for everyone!

It was reported just a week ago that Twitter would be looking to modify the way users interact, allowing them to get more words out of every tweet. It looks like that rollout is finally happening, as the company announced on its blog today.
Senior product manager Todd Sherman today announced that Twitter is removing the character usage from usernames and media in tweets. Translated, that means if you want to tag a Twitter handle or add a picture, you won’t have to pinch the rest of your words to have a whole thought fit. Usernames in replies, pictures, GIFs, and videos no longer count towards your character limit, and the same goes for quote tweets.
In addition, Twitter is also enabling the Retweet and Quote Tweet buttons for your own tweets. The idea is to allow users to repost something they’ve said earlier, without having to rephrase it (if the original tweet hit the character limit). In addition, that also works for a conversation with a single user that you want to be visible to your followers in their feeds. Previously, a tweet beginning with a Twitter handle would only show up for that user, unless someone specifically checked either of your timelines, thus spawning a “.@” trend. Now, tweets beginning with a handle will be visible to all your followers by default.
Sherman says the announcement today is more just to prime both their users as well as developers using their API. The actual update with the new features will roll out over the coming months.

BJP has also planned to hold over 200 events across the country between May 26 and June 10 to highlight the government's "successes" and Modi is likely to address rallies in different places, starting with an address in Saharanpur on May 26.

Facebook says no evidence of political bias found on 'Trending Topics'

Facebook Inc said that an investigation had found no evidence of political bias in the selection or prominence of stories shown on its Trending Topics feature.

Facebook said it was making changes aimed at keeping political bias out of its "trending" stories list even though an internal investigation revealed no evidence it was happening.
"Our investigation has revealed no evidence of systematic political bias in the selection or prominence of stories included in the Trending Topics feature," Facebook general counsel Colin Stretch yesterday said in a letter responding to a query from Republican US Senator John Thune, who chairs the commerce committee.
"In fact, our analysis indicated that the rates of approval of conservative and liberal topics are virtually identical in Trending Topics."

Facebook was unable to substantiate any specific accusations of bias made in media reports, which relied on anonymous sources, Stretch said in the letter, a copy of which was made available by the leading social network.
"At the same time, as you would expect with an inquiry of this nature, our investigation could not exclude the possibility of isolated improper actions or unintentional bias in the implementation of our guidelines or policies," Stretch said.

"As part of our commitment to continually improve our products and to minimise risks where human judgement is involved, we are making a number of changes." Facebook updated terminology in its guidelines to be clearer and gave reviewers refresher training that emphasised content decisions may not be based on politics or ideology, the letter said.
The review team will be subject to more oversight and controls, and Facebook will no longer rely on lists of external websites and news outlets to assess the importance of topics in stories.
"We want people to be confident that our community welcomes all viewpoints," Stretch said in the letter.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said last week that conservatives are an important part of the social network after a meeting aimed at defusing concerns it is politically biased.
"We've built Facebook to be a platform for all ideas," Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page after a meeting at the company's California headquarters to discuss the allegations about anti-conservative bias.
"It doesn't make sense for our mission or our business to suppress political content or prevent anyone from seeing what matters most to them."
Zuckerberg called the meeting after technology news outlet Gizmodo a week earlier reported allegations that Facebook was deliberately omitting articles with conservative viewpoints from the sidebar that lists popular stories.

Shardul Thakur's cricket journey: From Palghar to West Indies

Once criticised for being overweight, Mumbai fast bowler worked hard to force his way to Indian team

Shardul Thakur could not hide his joy on Monday after earning his first selecShardul Thakur could not hide his joy on Monday after earning his first selection for India for the four-Test series in the West Indies.
"I cannot say in words how happy I am," the 24-year-old right-arm medium-pacer told dna. "When Sandeep Patil sir called me to inform about my selection, I was on cloud nine. I will talk to you later. I just want to celebrate the moment," he added.
Thakur's hard work in Ranji Trophy has finally been rewarded. With 133 wickets from 37 first-class matches since his debut in 2012-13, Thakur has been one of the consistent performers in domestic scene, bowling untiringly on some of the lifeless pitches.
"I was hoping to be selected for the Test team. I deserved to be selected as I have been doing well in the last three seasons," Thakur said.
After picking up a joint highest 48 sticks in 2014-15 Ranji Trophy season, Thakur has been knocking on the doors of international cricket. He preceded that season with 27 wickets in six Ranji matches and followed it with another 41 in the 2015-16 in which Mumbai won the title for the 41st time.
Selection to India 'A' last season against the visiting Australia and South Africa 'A' sides besides a place in the Board President's XI squad against South Africa in the two-day game late last year were all learning experiences for the right-arm bowler whose strength is moving the ball way from the right-hander at a good pace.
"Playing for India 'A' alongside Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara among others gave me a taste of what international cricket is all about. Though in the 'A' series, the spinners took a majority of the wickets," Thakur said. "The IPL experience of playing with international cricketers has also come in handy," he said.
Thakur was not in a mood to reflect back on his past seasons. He has also not thought about the West Indies tour. He is living in the moment and celebrate it with his friends while also making a thanksgiving visit to his coaches.
For someone who has travelled the distance from Palghar to Churchgate in the very early hours in his younger days, for someone who was overweight when he broke into the first-class scene, and who has shed weight to be fit for the demands of today's cricket, Thakur has a good reason to celebrate the occasion as the news was yet to sink in.
At the same time, he is mature enough to know that the celebrations will not last long and that he has to focus on his task at hand and also live up to former Australian paceman Jeff Thomson's words when the Australian said: "Shardul is a fantastic bowler and has good skills to succeed at the international level."

Thakur in first-class cricket:

Matches: 37
Wickets: 133
Average: 27.53
Best bowling (Innings): 6/53
Best bowling (match): 9/123

Thakur in last 3 Ranji seasons:

Season Matches Wickets Average
2015-16 11 41 15.48
2014-15 10 48 20.81

Gaya sessions court has asked for case diary and local case report from the police.

The district administration had declared her a proclaimed offender, after she went underground following institution of case against her under the new Excise Act.

Dhoni to lead in Zimbabwe, KL Rahul earns ODI call-up

The All-India Senior Selection Committee, led by chairman Sandeep Patil and BCCI Honorary Secretary Ajay Shirke, picked the squad for limited-overs series in Zimbabwe and the four-match Test series in West Indies.

Mumbai: Young cricketers, more often than not, aspire to break their milk teeth in the sport under an immaculate principal; many of the Indian players’ dreams are set to turn real. They will board the flight to Zimbabwe for a limited-overs (three ODIs, three T20Is) series starting June 11 under the leadership of MS Dhoni. The All-India Senior Selection Committee, led by chairman Sandeep Patil and BCCI Honorary Secretary Ajay Shirke, picked the squad for the African sojourn and the four-match Test series in West Indies.

Selector Sandeep Patil and BCCI Honorary Secretary Ajay Shirke at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Monday.
“Since Dhoni retired from Tests, he himself was very keen to tour with the youngsters. It is a good opportunity for the young players to learn from him,” said Patil at the BCCI headquarters here on Monday. The report, which the selectors collected from Team India physiotherapist Patrick Farhat, demanded Virat Kohli to rest after the IPL. “According to the report, Kohli will rest after IPL; Murali Vijay had a niggle, so he isn’t included in the Zimbabwe tour. Ashish Nehra will undergo a surgery for his hamstring injury. Barring these three cricketers, there were no injury concerns,” Patil added. Patil pointed that no cricketers told BCCI about rest; the selection committee, by itself, wanted to send a young and fresh team to Zimbabwe. The miscellany, blend of popular IPL names and uncapped players, is fascinating but as many as 17 cricketers, including all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who were instrumental in the team’s limited-overs coursework in Australia, Asia Cup and the ICC World Twenty20 were overlooked. Yuvraj Singh (34) and Harbhajan Singh (35), who sprung back earlier this year in T20I cricket, were ignored which is a worrying sign for their future. But Patil ruled out the idea of forced retirements. “Selectors have no right to tell a player when to retire. We are looking at the future of Indian cricket. We brought Yuvraj and Harbhajan back for the ICC World Twenty20. We pick players on the basis of their performances and fitness. We will be glad if they perform and get back to the team,” added Patil. Yuvraj suffered an ankle injury during the World T20 and remained out of action for more than a month. Mohammad Shami — who last played a Test match one-and-a half years back in Australia — will be back in whites owing to his consistent, injury-free outing in domestic tournaments and IPL. On the other hand, Karnataka batsman Lokesh Rahul earned his maiden ODI and T20I call-up after his brilliant run of form as a batsman and wicketkeeper for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Yuzvendra Chahal, another RCB recruit, cracked the code.

Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer, despite a string of good knocks in the domestic circuit, couldn’t find a place in the probables. But speedster Shardul Thakur earned a place in the 17-member Test squad for West Indies. “We discussed Shreyas but only 15-16 players can go on a tour. Last time, we had picked Karn Sharma but we thought Yuzvendra Chahal will add variation, so we picked him,” said the 59-year-old Patil.

Ajinkya Rahane’s exclusion raised eyebrows considering he led the side to Zimbabwe last year and hadn’t played much limited-overs cricket for India.

It is a known trend that cricketers will slide into the Indian team through IPL but selectors often face criticism for not being present in the stadiums. “We get a better opportunity to assess players on television through several replays. Hence, we don’t need to go to the stadiums,” Patil cleared the doubt. The BCCI will announce the support staff for the tour soon. Squad (for ODI-T20 series in Zimbabwe) MS Dhoni (Captain and wicketkeeper), Lokesh Rahul, Faiz Fasal, Manish Pandey, Karun Nair, Ambati Rayudu, Rishi Dhawan, Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jaspreet Bumrah, Barinder Sran, Mandeep Singh, Kedar Jadhav, Jaydev Unadkat, Yuzvendra Chahal Squad (for Tests in West Indies) Virat Kohli (Captain), Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha (wicketkeeper), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Mohammad Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Stuart Binny, Amit Mishra.
